Title: A standard-based architecture for the SLU library information system

Abstract: Summary: The research presented an IT architecture model for the SLU Library and the detail of a standards model guided by the Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM) and The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF). The design of the study is descriptive. The main data gathering tool was unstructured interviews of various library personnel in SLU and other university libraries. 8.2 Findings: The study provided a target IT architecture model for the SLU library that answers the business requirements of the SLU Library and meets the demands of an open system architecture. This includes a work architecture, an information architecture, an applications architecture and technical architecture. The technical architecture model is populated by standards which is the glue that holds an information system that supports the strategic vision of the SLU and to achieve the business goals of the SLU Library. 8.3 Conclusions: To support the SLU in achieving its vision, the role of the library as the primary information provider of the university must be reconsidered in the light of the technology. Information technology is a valuable tool and resource and must be designed with careful considerations for current and future business requirements. The study shows the need for a client/server, distributed configuration which supports the proposed work, information and application architecture. 8.4. Recommendation: Future implementation of an information system for the SLU Library must take into consideration the standards that will allow the system to interoperate with other systems inside and outside SLU. Also, to be able reap the full benefits of a Standards-based Architecture, the complete approach need to be undertaken. Finally, due to the large amount of network resources, further studies on cataloging and classifying of these resources must be undertaken.
